Shaping Futures: A Glimpse into the KiPiDi SYOB Graduation Day
Graduation Day for the cohort who make it through the KiPiDi SYOB programme is always special. For two months, eight consecutive Fridays were a testament to a group’s commitment to knowledge and perseverance. They have demonstrated resilience, determination and an indomitable entrepreneurial spirit.
For the Naledi SYOB IV class of 2023, it was the grand finale of their academic journey – a jubilant celebration of personal growth and learning, an achievement many initially doubted.
The KiPiDi SYOB programme stands as a beacon of hope amidst our struggling economy. It empowers learners to take the reins of their economic destinies by fostering self-reliance and an entrepreneurial spirit. We’re navigating through a low to non-existent growth economy. Entrepreneurship is no longer a choice; it’s a lifeline, a survival strategy, and ultimately, a pathway to prosperity.
South Africa finds itself in what we can describe as the post-employment era. It’s a response, partly to the rapid transformation in the world’s economy and job market – driven by technological advancements like AI, robotics and automation, and partly due to the failure of our political leaders to cultivate an environment of business that supports investment leading to sustainable and inclusive growth. Either way, the outcome is alarmingly high unemployment rates. It’s a trajectory that’s simply unsustainable.
Yet, the KiPiDi SYOB programme offers a bold retort: While we may not have the power to change the broader economic climate, we can still mould our economic futures. We can create opportunities, we can dream, and we can achieve, irrespective of our circumstances.
On Saturday, 3 June, the KiPiDi spirit was in full display.

The day kicked off with the traditional pitching contest where participants competed to convince their peers and fellow contenders that their business idea was the winning ticket. Each contestant was allotted five minutes to sell their idea. The recollection of Day 1, when only a single learner had the courage to stand and speak in front of the class, juxtaposed with the confidence radiating from every graduating member, was indeed a sight to behold.
It is the nature of competition that someone passes the winning post first, closely followed by those in second and third place. No losers, for it is the act of participation and doing that defines success in the world of KiPiDi.
Kefilwe Nlatseng 1st – primary school academic support
Boitumelo Monametsi 2nd – network selling
Nthabiseng Mdluli 3rd – commercial kitchen cleaning
Naledi, keen not to be outdone by Slovoville and Green Village, hosted the first KiPiDi Networking event. KiPiDi Warriors from Slovoville, Green Village and Jabavu showcased their businesses and welcomed the newest KiPiDi Warriors from Naledi. A festive market day, complete with food stalls and music, set the tone for the day.
As the popular saying goes, “Every end is a new beginning.” This rings true for the recent graduates of the KiPiDi SYOB programme in Naledi. They now join a burgeoning network of likeminded individuals, dedicated to entrepreneurship and changing not just their material circumstances but also those of their families, communities and ultimately, our country.
Indeed, if you’re invested in the economy and stand to lose something, you’ll see how change is catalysed.
Next stop Phiri, starting Friday, 23 June at the Mapetla Cluhouse. See you there!
