Day 7 Time For Action
Day seven marked the finale of the KiPiDi Start Your Own Business (SYOB) workshop, a day that was filled with the practical application of concepts, lively discussions, and the much-awaited anticipation for the “Idea Pitching Contest”.
The day commenced with a hands-on task of building a financial model for a hypothetical nail salon. The attendees worked meticulously, calculating the costs associated with a standard “gel nail job”. This involved determining the raw material inputs and the time required by a nail technician, effectively providing a realistic insight into the intricacies of service costing.
Next, the focus shifted towards capital expenditure planning. Participants identified and costed the equipment necessary to open a salon. This exercise was not only an introduction to the concept of capital expenditure but also emphasized the need for careful budgeting when starting a new venture.
With the costing and budgeting done, the workshop moved onto modeling an income and expenditure budget. The aim was to assess the salon’s potential profitability and pinpoint the break-even point. This exercise highlighted the importance of understanding revenue streams and managing expenses to achieve profitability.
Following the financial modeling, a cash flow forecast was developed. This crucial business tool helped the participants identify the timing and amount of funding required to launch and sustain the business during the initial start-up phase. It was a sobering reminder that while ideas are the heart of entrepreneurship, cash flow is its lifeblood.
Moving from financial matters to legal considerations, the workshop then delved into formalization and compliance issues. The participants learned about the importance of company registration, tax compliance, and adherence to local bylaws. This session emphasized that understanding and following regulatory requirements is vital for securing funding and avoiding legal pitfalls.
The final session of the day was dedicated to the “Idea Pitching Contest” to be held on graduation day. The participants were briefed about the expectations and requirements for this contest, further fuelling the excitement for the workshop’s grand culmination.
In summary, the seventh day of the KiPiDi SYOB workshop was a comprehensive blend of practical exercises, theoretical discussions, and entrepreneurial anticipation. As the participants gear up for their final showcase, they are armed with the knowledge and insights gained from this enriching journey.
See you at the pitching contest Saturday, 3 June!
