Ideation and Validation

Day 2 centred around the crucial process of ideation, with a specific focus on brainstorming, mind mapping, and Walt Disney’s Creative Strategy. Additionally, the workshop introduced attendees to the practical and invaluable Validation Board, which helps streamline the testing and evaluation of ideas.

Diving into Ideation: Brainstorming, Mind Mapping, and Walt Disney’s Creative Strategy

The day began with an in-depth exploration of ideation – the process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas. This is a critical aspect of starting any business, as it lays the foundation for the innovation that distinguishes a successful venture from its competitors. The class was taken through various ideation techniques, emphasising the importance of open-mindedness and creativity.

First, we tackled brainstorming, a group problem-solving technique where participants are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas without fear of judgement. The primary goal is to generate as many ideas as possible, no matter how far-fetched they may seem. The focus was on quantity over quality during the initial stages, as this often leads to the most innovative solutions.

Next, we delved into mind mapping, a visual tool that allows individuals and teams to organise and structure their ideas in a way that fosters creativity. By drawing connections between seemingly unrelated concepts, participants can uncover new perspectives and opportunities that may not have been immediately apparent. The class practised how to create a mind map, experimenting with various formats and layouts.

Lastly, we introduced Walt Disney’s Creative Strategy, a method that involves adopting three distinct roles – the Dreamer, the Realist, and the Critic. This technique encourages individuals to approach a problem from multiple angles, balancing creativity with practicality and critical thinking. Participants took turns adopting each role, generating a robust and diverse range of ideas.

Validating Ideas: The Validation Board

The second half of the day focused on the Validation Board, a powerful tool for evaluating and testing ideas that emerge during the ideation phase. This board allows entrepreneurs to clearly outline their assumptions, target audience, and the problem they are trying to solve. By systematically validating each assumption through experiments and gathering real-world feedback, entrepreneurs can refine their ideas and make data-driven decisions.

A step-by-step guide was provided on using the Validation Board, from defining the problem and identifying target customers to crafting experiments and pivoting based on the results. Attendees had the opportunity to apply this tool to their own ideas, gaining hands-on experience in validating and iterating on their concepts.

Day 2 of the KiPiDi Start Your Own Business workshop was filled with engaging discussions and hands-on activities, leaving participants with valuable insights and practical tools to help them develop and refine their business ideas. By combining the power of brainstorming, mind mapping, and Walt Disney’s Creative Strategy, budding entrepreneurs can generate innovative ideas that set their businesses apart. Furthermore, the use of the Validation Board ensures that these ideas are refined and tested, maximising the chances of success in the competitive world of entrepreneurship.

Stay tuned for our recap of Day 3, where we will explore topics such as business model generation and marketing strategies.
