Slovoville Youth Launches KiPiDi Start Your Own Business

Saturday, 4 June 2022 arrived, and what a day it turned out to be!

The KiPiDi Warriors gathered at the Slovoville Community Centre for the first of the KiPiDi | Start Your Own Business workshops.

Amanda opened the workshop with a short introduction about herself, the KiPiDi Team and what the KiPiDi | Start Your Own Business programme is all about; minimising the chance of failure, and maximising the chance of success.

Starting with the end in mind Amanda defined success as launching your own business, remaining in business, and growing your business.

Cash in needs to be bigger than cash out!

With no time to waste the workshop broke up into their groups and were tasked with identifying a name for their group, a group leader and nominating a member of the group to introduce the members of the group to the workshop.

You had to be there! One of the groups even composed a group song. Beat that if you can!

After a quick break the focus turned to the individual as an entrepreneur. What exactly is an entrepreneur and what is entrepreneurship. The various characteristics displayed by entrepreneurs were explored with the class reflecting upon which, if any, of these characteristics they as individuals displayed.

No time to rest. The next group activity was on the go as the groups broke away to discuss what they had learnt, and were tasked with identifying one of the defining characteristics of entrepreneurs they thought was the most important and why. Again, come back and present!

A welcome coffee break sponsored by Pick n Pay boosted the energy banks and it was back to the classroom where the concepts of entrepreneurial mindset and intention were explored in greater detail.

It was time to look in the mirror as the class explored their own entrepreneurial mindset, how they think, their state of mind, the lens through which they see the world, and how this influences their behaviour as entrepreneurs.

But mindset is not enough. It’s the formation of entrepreneurial intention – the belief one has that they will start a new business venture in the future – followed by action that will carry the day.

The workshop closed with the KiPiDi Warriors reflecting that by making it through to the first workshop they had demonstrated they were capable of crossing the intention … action divide.

Homework time.

In preparation for next week’s workshop everyone was tasked with preparing a five minute presentation in which they must identify five characteristics they share with successful entrepreneurs and where they have displayed these characteristics in their own life.

A great day indeed.
