Jabavu Day 6 – Pitch Perfect

The hall was buzzing with excitement as those who’d stayed the course prepared to pitch their business ideas to an audience of their peers.

Lerato the Kota King

First up was Lerato the King of Kotas. Lerato was serving the breakfast market for Soweto residents on the go early in the morning. Monday to Friday Lerato will be found at the Bara Taxi Rank with his hotbox delivering his unique brand of Kota’s to taxi drivers, nurses, teachers and other early risers making their way to work.

Violet and all things nails

Violet brought a different take on the nails business. A skilled nail technician herself, Violet identified the need for affordable training in the nail tech space in Kasi. While most of the leading nail care brands offer training courses they charge premium prices beyond the means of most aspiring nail technicians in Kasi. Violet believes there is a massive market for a more competitively and affordably priced offering in the training space.

Simnikiwe lunch box Mama

Simnikiwe focused on parents with young children and “what to put in my child’s lunch box today?” Simnikiwe’s idea is to provide Mum’s with a selection of pre-packed snacks that answers this everyday question. Buying wholesale and letting Mum’s configure the snack pack will allow Simnikiwe to offer a price competitive product that takes the daily headache out of preparing your child’s lunchbox.

Thuso and rooms to rent

Thuso wants to play in the app space and take on the giants in the classified ad space. Rooms for rent is big business in Kasi. Thuso believes there is space for a new entrant focusing upon the needs of landlords and renters in Kasi by extending the range of information provided by the landlord in respect of the room and its locale as well rating landlords and tenants alike.

Chenell gas power

Chanel thought she’d capitalise on loadshedding by starting a gas refilling shop in her local neighbourhood. Gas as an alternative to electricity is definitely more affordable than solar in Kasi. The capital outlay is the price of a gas bottle and a gas plate or two. The potential to link up with a major gas supplier and roll out the concept in Kasi is a definite winner.

Sindisiwe Queen of the braids

What would Kasi be without a hair salon? Applying the tools learned over the course of the workshop Sindisiwe demonstrated how she could expand her business focusing upon the premium segment of black hair care and style in Kasi. For Sindisiwe, skilled in braiding, it’s more than just getting your hair done, it’s about the experience as well.

In a time when many young people are often dismissed or underestimated, this event served as a powerful reminder of the incredible potential and creativity of the next generation. It was a testament to the power of collaboration and support, and a celebration of the courage and determination of those who dare to dream big and pursue their goals.
